Applications
The fundamental difference between regular aluminium and anodised aluminium is that the latter has a layer of oxide over the surface material. This layer of oxide is beneficial for many reasons, it improves the insulation properties of the material and increases the thickness of the surface, turning it into a very hard compound and therefore ensuring it’ll have a high wear resistance. In fact, the surface of anodised aluminium is so hard, it comes second only to diamond on the Mohs scale.
The addition of this anodised layer to aluminium makes it a particularly easy material to laser mark and laser engrave. Unlike non-anodised aluminium, a CO2 laser can be used effectively to mark and engrave anodised aluminium.
Aluminium is an excellent material for outdoor use because of its natural oxide layer. It is especially suitable for use in the outdoors if it has been anodised or coated. It’s a popular material for signage and architectural features, all of which can be permanently marked with a Lotus Laser machine.
Both fiber and CO2 lasers can be used to engrave aluminium, but the best wavelength depends on the goal you wish to achieve. Fiber lasers are ideal for marking bare or anodised aluminium, whilst CO2 is perfect for aluminium applications with a coated surface.
This all depends on the surface of your product. For example, on anodised aluminium, a laser engraving machine will remove the anodised layer to reveal the metal base underneath. This creates an attractive, high-contrast and permanent mark.
