What is the best choice for laser engraving metal?

For metals, Lotus Fiber is the golden standard. Most lasers are limited by fixed settings. Our specialised MOPA fiber lasers use enhanced pulse control to “fine tune” the laser to the specific metal you’re marking. This gives you the widest range of applications – from high-contrast marks on titanium to vivid colours on stainless steel.

True 3D technology as standard for marking curved or complex surfaces. Fastest results; widest range of metals.

Regular MOPA fiber laser systems will work for engraving on most metals, but can be limited according to their ‘waveforms’, or settings for power delivery. Fewer waveforms mean fewer options for how the engraving looks, and when trying to achieve colour marking or annealing can mean a lower quality result.

Why might I need a different laser from MOPA fiber?

MOPA fiber lasers are really effective on some plastics, like ABS. However there are some materials where they don’t cut it:

  • Silicone & soft plastics
  • Acrylic
  • Rubber
  • Glass
  • Some types of wood

For these applications, a Lotus UV Laser is a much better alternative for creating an incredible engraving.

See Lotus UV Engravers
Typical MOPA Fiber
Fiber lasers operate at a wavelength of 1064nm, best suited for marking across a wider variety of metals. Their power means they can achieve surface marks and deep engraving all in one system and are typically better for engraving metals than CO2 or UV laser systems.

Q-Switch laser engravers offer very little when it comes to engraving metal. Their continuous wave technology means extremely limited power delivery, so achieving a clear, precise result across all metals is difficult and unlikely to be consistent. Q-Switch lasers are a relic of when fiber lasers first came onto the market, but don’t stand up to the quality of MOPA systems.

CO2 lasers cannot engrave directly onto bare metal, instead they need some kind of chemical to allow the heat of the CO2 lasers to transfer onto the metal component. This makes them extremely unreliable and unsustainable for an engraving business where fast production, consistency, and reliability are paramount.

UV laser marking systems can achieve some effective results when engraving metals, but lack the ability to engrave with any depth owing to their lower power ‘cold processing’, which is more suited for materials like glass and silicone. Additionally, because UV lasers are so effective at marking glass, using a UV laser on a reflective metal such as stainless steel runs the risk of reflecting the UV laser back onto the lens itself, causing permanent damage.

Why Choose MOPA Fiber for Laser Engraving Metal?

MOPA fiber systems engrave with better precision, offer more flexible power delivery, and can produce superior results across all kinds of metals. The fact MOPA lasers are so versatile means you’re able to engrave stainless steel, titanium, ABS plastic, brass, copper, and much more all with one engraving system.

Lotus MOPA fiber engravers stand out for offering even more flexibility than other competitive machines. Each unique power setting is called a ‘Waveform’, and most lasers offer somewhere between 2 – 5 waveform options. Lotus MOPA fiber engravers, like the Lotus Meta-C, offer 17. This means they have far more control over how the engraving looks and produce higher-contrast results for traceability, serial numbers, and QR codes. It’s also the reason why colour marking on stainless steel is easy to achieve with a Lotus engraving machine, with a MOPA fiber being by far the best way to create vivid colours on metals.

FAQ

For industrial use, a powerful MOPA fiber system is required. Additionally, it should be Class 2 safety certified, LEV compliant with powerful extraction to meet employee safety regulations. It should also feature components such as pneumatic doors which won’t wear out over prolonged use.

Doors with hinges, cables, and mechanical switches are not suited for industrial use as these components are likely to wear out very quickly.

Switches, HMI’s and interfaces should be IP65 rated and preferably support millions of presses/cycles/operations, or years of continual use.

All Lotus laser engraving machines use automatic, safety-sealed doors. They are built using switches rated for over 5 million cycles, along with interfaces and electronics designed to last for decades, allowing for maximum efficiency, longevity, and durability.

MOPA fibers offer more flexibility in power delivery. Regular fiber lasers will be limited to one engraving setting that can only mark metals in one specific way.

Because MOPA fiber systems allow much more fine control over the power delivery, these are superior for engraving a variety of materials, from stainless steel to aluminium, with different results in terms of colour and contrast.

Lotus MOPA fiber systems provide even more power flexibility than other MOPA engraving machines, taking this level of quality, versatility, and power much higher and opening up more engraving applications and consistent, repeatable colour marking.

A professional metal laser etcher should offer lots of power flexibility, and should operate as Class 2, meaning the doors have an interlock feature providing protection from laser radiation.

Hobbyist lasers tend to be Class 4 and aren’t safe for longtime use, requiring protective eyewear, they are easily spotted as the will be open air (no door), or may have a plastic semi-transparent door/enclosure, but don’t use truly protective materials if you see their laser classification designation (class 4).

For these reasons, a truly professional metal laser etcher can cost upwards of £18,000, to ensure consistent results on all metals and a safe working environment.

1) Lotus Laser Systems: with 30 years’ experience and with MOPA systems that offer superior quality and consistency compared with other laser engravers. For engraving on metals, a Lotus MOPA Fiber engraving machine will be the most powerful and reliable system you can buy.

2) Keyence: Keyence offers fiber engraving systems for coding applications. These systems are effective for metal engraving but typically lack the Class 2 safety requirements for an industrial engraving system.

3) Trotec: Trotec make fiber engraving systems that are self-contained but have limited options in terms of wattage and power delivery.

A MOPA fiber laser engraver is the best for stainless steel. With a MOPA fiber, you can engrave high-contrast QR codes for traceability. With more advanced systems like Lotus Fiber that have wider waveform options and stable, micro z-axis positioning you can etch colours directly onto the metal with no preparation work required, and you can produce results with very fine and accurate detail.

Lotus MOPA Fibers provide even more flexibility in power delivery than other laser systems, meaning annealing that’s clearer and more durable, deep engraving that’s far faster with high-wattage systems like our 200w versions, and more variation and vibrancy when colour marking because of the wider range of power settings.

For small business the best metal laser engraving machines are MOPA fiber engraving machines. These offer a combination of accuracy and precision that other fiber engraving machines cannot achieve.

For SMEs and small businesses, a laser system like the Lotus µMeta 30w fiber engraver would be ideal: it has a small footprint but a powerful 30w fiber laser source that means engraving on all metals, from stainless steel to aluminium, is easy to achieve.

The best laser engraver for aluminium is a MOPA fiber engraver. The ability to change how the power is delivered means different types of engraving, including deep engraving and super-fast etching, are all achievable on one machine.

Because Lotus MOPA fiber machines offer more power flexibility than other similar engraving systems, they are far more equipped for engraving quickly and accurately on aluminium, anodised aluminium, and aluminium alloys.

The best laser engraver for titanium is a MOPA fiber engraving system. Titanium requires a powerful fiber laser to produce high-contrast results for traceability, QR codes, and serial numbers.

To achieve better quality marks on titanium, and to produce vibrant colours, a powerful MOPA fiber system like the Lotus Meta-C Fiber is the best solution, providing a huge range of power settings for consistent results and more variety in terms of what you can engrave.

Typical Industries and Applications

Lotus MOPA fiber engravers are the best marking systems for traceability, part numbering, serialisation, QR codes, and much more. The extremely high quality and consistency of what a Lotus Laser can do makes it ideal for making sure your components have permanent, durable, tough marks across stainless steel, aluminium, titanium, and more.

The power and accuracy of MOPA fibers makes them best for engraving onto metal components:

  • Barcodes
  • Alphanumeric text
  • QR Codes
  • Part numbers
  • Serial plates
  • Variable data

For part numbering and record keeping, this kind of indelible mark is a crucial part of the process.

Lotus machines lead in the industry for this kind of part marking thanks to their incredible power delivery and reliable system manufacture. All our fiber systems guarantee consistency across every single mark, even when marking thousands of components every day.

For manufacturers of car parts, aerospace, engineering and more; a traceability system is critical to quality monitoring. The use of a laser etching machine for metal parts ensures that these marks are permanent, resistant to a lot of friction and heat and will remain long into the future.

Fiber lasers make personalisation on products and giftware fast and easy to achieve. The Lotus µMeta Fiber is used for event engraving and brand activation for exactly this reason – companies like Good Empire know it will make a truly remarkable customer experience with a fast, high-quality etching on metal products.

A Lotus fiber engraving system is built for fast engraving with extremely fine detail, making any logo, font, artwork, or design achievable across a huge variety of metal products.

In addition to engineering parts and tools, laser etching machines are used for metal promotional gifts, jewellery, and branding. Personalised items made of metal often include:

  • Bottles
  • Lighters
  • Shavers
  • Cutlery
  • Picture frames
  • Key fobs

Laser engraving provides versatility and accuracy when portraying a personalised result.

For permanent branding into metals, a fiber laser will make the clearest, most pristine finish. Lotus Laser engraving systems allow branding with any artwork on any metal as the huge number of waveforms means high quality engraving on anything from steel to anodised aluminium.

The Lotus Meta-C Fiber also has a specialised optic for marking on curved surfaces without needing a rotary, so branding on bottles and flasks is much faster, more efficient, and more cost effective than other fiber systems.

Aside from components, a fiber laser machine can be used to make legible marks on common engineering tools such as callipers, spanners and drill bits. Some of these parts require a high level of accuracy, making a metal engraving laser a particularly suitable technology for marking characters that are still legible at 1-point size. With measuring tools, the precision and accuracy of the markings are critical. The automated aspect of a laser etching machine delivers superior repeatability and consistency, ensuring that measuring tools are marked and positioned perfectly.

Metal Laser Marking & Engraving Approaches

A laser engraving machine removes only a thin layer of the metal material to make permanent marks and not enough to cause any structural damage, typically fibre systems are the best to achieve this effectively. Higher intensity machines can be used to cut the metal.

Engraving

MOPA Fiber engravers can create deeper engravings by removing a small amount of the surface of the metal. For deep engraving, a powerful MOPA fiber laser is required. This is why for achieving significant depth into metal, Lotus fiber engravers include a 200w laser system, designed for achieving incredible accuracy even when removing a huge part of the surface of the metal. On low wattage systems, this process can take a considerable amount of time.

White marking

A surface level mark with a clear, white result. Especially on anodised aluminium, this produces incredibly high contrast, and when marked with a Lotus MOPA fiber engraver can etch at incredibly high speed. On stainless steel, however, white marking can suffer a lack of contrast when viewed from certain angles.

Colour marking

MOPA fiber lasers are very effective for creating vivid colours on stainless steel and titanium. Lotus fiber systems, by offering a greater power versatility than other machines and smaller hatch sizes, can offer a greater range of colours for striking logos and branding. Colour marking is only possible on metals wherein the surface be oxidised however, making colour marking not possible on aluminium, copper, or brass.

Black annealing

A surface level mark with high contrast and durability, perfect for part marking and incredibly consistent when marking with a Lotus system like the Meta-C. The only disadvantage is that can take longer than other marks, but where finish quality is more important than speed, black annealing is a perfect result for traceability.
